When you don't like porn, the internet must serve a different purpose. 

When I fall down the rabbit hole of a good wifi connection, I usually find myself on fashion blogs, news-y sites or Wikipedia. As I have mentioned, Refinery 29 has stolen many of my good years and The Guardian is my brain coffee in the morning. 

Due to this often excessive interneting, I have the attention span of a 5 year old at Build-A-Bear. But when I saw Oroma Elewa for the first time I just kinda stopped. She's beautiful. Really beautiful. All photos of her ever are so steamy-hot-fashion sexy that I scorn my whole Instagram history. But hey you can follow me: @heatherloveslove yo. 

Anyway, she is the darling of Tumblr, P.S. reblogging her is your stamp to the cool girls club. 

But more than that, (there has to be more) she's an African pioneer. With little publishing experience she had the chutzpah to publish the deathly cool Pop Africana and self-made herself into a fashion/publishing badass. Pop Africana is no more (I think) but her website promises an e-store coming soon and she also happens to be a dj. It seems that when you have as many hours in the day as Beyonce you can get up to a whole lot if you're Oroma... The reason I'm actually doing this post is because I follow Miss Elewa on Instagram and I saw that she's in Pretoria... Yes, The 012! 

I would love to become her SA bestie but even Pretoria is a bit far for me. You know what is also quite cool about her? On the Italian Vogue website she listed our own Ma Brr as one of her inspirations. How great? 

Too great.

Are You Gonna Eat Your Cornbread?!

Whoo, I just remembered this classic scene from Life... That's a high school throwback right there. 

Anyway, I baked this last night and it came out pretty damn tasty.

Recipe (adapted from Recipes From The Royal Kitchen):

2.5 cups of cake flour
1 tablespoon of baking power
A pinch of salt
3/4 cups sugar
125 grams melted butter
2 extra large eggs 
1 tub of full fat cream cheese
3/4 condensed milk

1. Sift all the dry ingredients and add the sugar and melted butter
2. Whisk eggs and condensed milk together and add flour mixture and then mix well.
3. Turn out into a greased loaf tin and bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees for about 50 minutes. 

Note: If the edges get too brown but the middle isn't cooked, cover the tin with tinfoil and stick it back in the oven. 

P.S. This recipe book was free with this month's Food & Home magazine. Yup, I'm basically a suburban mom.

P.S. The South Africa advert is a hoot, the inverted commas make me chuckle each time I look at it. Oh yes, and Victoria Falls was in South Africa back then, good to know...

Before I begin, my somewhat non-existent photography skills must be noted. I have reduced a yummy, moreish pudding to a half-eaten (more like inhaled) disaster...

But my tummy didn't mind my lack of presentation, it was delicious!

I didn't make any friends as the recipe promised because I simply didn't share, but this recipe will certainly be repeated until my jeans don't fit, then I'll buy some jeggings and bake up some more (it's that good).

Marie Claire and Cookies!

I was tickled to see the letter I wrote to Marie Claire in the latest issue.

Although I had already painstakingly prepared my surprised voice for when I won the prize for the winning letter, it was still fun to see my letter there for all to see.

The last time I wrote to a publication I was 11 years old writing to the Sunday Times Magazine kids section to inform them of my varied hobbies. Naturally I lied, so my exotic hobbies ranged from ice-skating to horse riding and soccer. My real hobbies as an 11 year old were far more sedentary and I was in fact petrified of horses. Nonetheless, my letter of lies was published and kept for weeks on end to show family and friends my literary talent.

Fast-foward to this week, reading the latest issue of MC was made even better by the fact that I had made vanilla cookies to scoff while looking at famished models and celebs.

The recipe for the cookies is from Joy the Baker and they're definitely worth making for the sweet smell of freshly baked cookies alone.

Maxhosa Knitwear

Winter has been especially cruel this year. (I'm typing with gloves). So naturally my thoughts have turned to woolly jerseys and hot chocolate.

The Design Indaba earlier this year was such a treat, one of the best finds were the jerseys shown above by Laduma Ngxokolo. His range, Maxhosa Knitwear is a collection of mohair patterned knits inspired by Xhosa initiates.

Laduma was increasingly frustrated with the fact that the initiates go through such a culturally-embedded process, ridding themselves of their previous wardrobe after circumcision (burning their whole damn wardrobe *gasp*) only to return wearing infamous Pringle 'diamond' jerseys.

As a result Laduma dreamed up these amazing designs and 'The Colourful World of Xhosa Culture' was born.

I only wish there was a women's range.

By the way, the first two pictures above are also great examples of men's knitwear, the first being from the great www.streetetiquette.com. The second being a snap from the sixties proving that style, real style, is eternal.

Anna Wintour Show Me Love!



It's funny how a little paper-clipped card can make a world of difference.

I never knew that Anna Wintour did this, or actually anything remotely nice; but now that I do I'm obsessed.

The queen of Vogue has earned herself the nickname Nuclear Wintour and her close friend Barbara Amiel is quoted as saying "Anna happens to be a friend of mine, a fact which is of absolutely no help in coping with the cold panic that grips me whenever we meet".

Big Ego



"Egoiste" meaning "selfish" is 280 pages and 2.3kg. There have been 16 issues of this black and white beaut since 1977.

The ego behind it all; Nicole Wisniak, not only controls all the usual facets of the magazine, she also designs all of the adverts, spending one year creating the Louis Vuitton advert featuring a regal polar bear.

The latest two-volume issue featuring Keira Knightley and James Thierree (grandson of Charlie Chaplin) is already sold out despite its 35 Euro price tag.

Wisniak doesn't care about time (the last issue was published five years ago) or english (the magazine is only in french).

In fact she doesn't care about much; she works from her bed and is quoted as saying that 'taste is not a democratic thing, it's a dictatorship'.

In a world of daily tabloids and oh-so-average monthly magazines this seems like the perfect antidote.

Elle Vs. Marie Claire!

Firstly, I have to state that I love both Elle (1st picture) and Marie Claire. I've been a loyal reader of both mags for years. Like a proud mama of two beautiful children I love them equally, but for different reasons.

Recently, one of my favourite parts of MC is their blog-style beauty section edited by Zanele Kumalo (take a peek at her amazing chop). The double page section is always so beautiful and informative.

However, last month I noticed the same layout featured in Elle. I definitely prefer the MC version.

I'm sad to see that Zanele will no longer be the beauty editor at MC, so hopefully it will remain my favourite feature of the mag under the new beauty editor.
