Pleasure X Pain
2
Wednesday, May 15, 2013
The pleasure principle, according to Jacques Lacan, functions as a limit to enjoyment: it is the law that commands the subject to 'enjoy as little as possible'.
At the same time the subject constantly attempts to transgress the prohibitions imposed on his enjoyment, to go beyond the pleasure principle.
Yet the result of transgressing the pleasure principle, according to Lacan, is not more pleasure but pain, since there is only a certain amount of pleasure that the subject can bear.
Beyond this limit, pleasure becomes pain, and this 'painful principle' is what Lacan calls jouissance.

Some of the photographs that I love most are from the lens of this Dutch photographer.
Tommy and I saw her exhibition in Dublin and the haunting images have been in my mind ever since.
The first one is my favourite.

"To love. To be loved.
To never forget your own insignificance.
To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you.
To seek joy in the saddest places.
To pursue beauty to its lair.
To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple.
To respect strength, not power.
Above all to watch. To try and understand.
To never look away. And never, never to forget."
Arundhati Roy.
Esra Røise!

Norwegian illustrator Esra Røise has worked for the likes of Vogue (China), Wallpaper and Nylon magazine. And I thought being Norwegian was cool enough...
Her illustrations are beautiful and she has a 'ø' (minuscule) in her surname, what more could you ask for?!

The Pearly Gates of Fashion!

Being in Korea a week now, I have begun to realize that Kimchi Land is the happy place where brands come to either die or be revived as nostalgic cool.
Stussy (yup, it still exists outside of your dad's closet), Kappa and FUBU have all chosen Korea as their final resting place.
Unfortunately, Korea is not a safe haven for all things, the elusive (see: life changing) KFC Double Crunch cannot be found in Korea either...

Brad Pitt!

Before becoming a star, Mr Pitt (or Mr Smith) drove strippers in limos and dressed as a giant chicken for the 'el Poco Loco' takeaway chain to support himself. Gosh, this job combo amuses me so very much.
He earned $38 for his first film role in 1987.
Looking at this picture, anyone with hair like that deserves to be a star.
Shoes!

The first picture is of the world's oldest leather shoe, which is a startling 5500 years old. It was discovered in Armenia on this day last year.
I know for a fact that I do not own any pair of shoes that will last that long.
Hell, most of my shoes probably won't make it to next year. Kinda makes you think though, what kind of shoes are going to be discovered in 5500 years time? A dusty pair of Nikes, perhaps?

There's just something special about them that makes me smile and wish I was in Amelie *cue French swishy music*.
The thing about these pictures, is that whatever you are is intensified, if you're beautiful your beauty appears blatantly doubtless and if you're sadly not, the no-lies pictures will make you curse your genes and maybe your jeans too.
P.S. The director of Amelie; Jean-Pierre Jeunet started working on the story for the film in 1974.

Ties for the Popo!

Do you want to be happy at the expense of others? Go to www.ties4cops.com
This is thee best website because like me, they believe that style comes before justice.
The recent D.S.K story has been in the news lately, but the French have managed to get to the crux of the issue; the absolutely disgusting ties worn by the N.Y cops.
Their ties are bad, Miami Vice-before-Colin-Farrell bad.
This website allows you to change all of that with a variety of options including "kebab"' and my personal favourite "nounours" (teddy bears).

Hello Kitty!

Monday, May 09, 2011
The latest trend in Japan is wearing animatronic cat ears "Necomimi", which respond to your mood by using sensors that detect signals from your brain.
When you are a sad feline the ears are droopy and when you're the cat that got the cream the ears perk up.
Mood rings are dead, now is the time of the kitty.
