Three Things That I Love Right Now!

1. This card. I love collecting interesting cards and each time that I visit somewhere that I really like I seek out a little memento for my purse. Unfortunately, when my purse was stolen (albeit temporarily)  the thief disposed of my cards and also (curiously) took the Polaroid that I had of Tommy, but (shamefully) left the Polaroid of me... My severely unphotogenic face now serves as a sad reminder that my photos are not worthy of criminal activity.

2. This song. This song is from the soundtrack for A Place Beyond The Pines. At first when I heard it I thought that I had heard it before. Then I realized that when a song is especially pristine I often conflate emotions with the song and so, it turned out that more accurately, I had felt the emotion captured in the song before. It's that beautiful.

3. These Lindt babies. So just shy of a month ago, I went on a chocolate bender. If chocolate was a drug then I'd be the star of a sad reality show about an addict that just can't make good. Immediately after my aforementioned binge I decided that I needed to detox, in other words, I was Russell Brand-ing. We all know he will eventually relapse, but it is cute that he's trying. Anyway, tomorrow marks the end of my abstinence and like the sinner that I am I have stockpiled my poison for appropriate levels of regret and shame.

Last words:

"I want to make beautiful things, even if nobody cares."

Mélanie Laurent!

At first, I actually didn't recognize her from Basterds.

Like my favourite movie character, Spider-Pig, she has so many looks...

Speaking of The Simpsons, her dad is the voice of the French Ned Flanders. How cool is that?! Plus her mom was a ballerina... Sheesh.

This stuff is amazing. Plus it smells like a flower orgy, so pretty.

Kokorico!

This advert is just so ridiculous.

Zoolander meet your match.

P.S Kokorico is the French onomatopoeia for a rooster’s cry.

Joey Starr!

Joey Starr a.k.a Didier Morville, a French rapper infamous for hitting a monkey on tv and for his romantic liaison with Beatrice Dalle is on the cover of the French GQ.

Grace Jones & Andre Leon Talley!

Of course.

Of course Andre Leon Talley and Grace Jones are friends.

And by their huge grins in this snap I'd say they're the best of friends, I mean, why wouldn't they be?

Talley has a masters degree in French and worked as Andy Warhol's assistant. Can he be any better?! I think Tommy summed him up best saying he dresses like a Japanese man from the future.

Grace Jones a.k.a Lady Gaga before Lady Gaga, is still considered a fashion pioneer and was a Bond girl to boot.

I love 'em both. In fact a naked snap of Miss Jones is my screensaver.

Better Together!

The Kooples is a French brand started by three brothers who are the sons of the creators of the successful Comptoir de Cotonniers women's wear brand.

I just love the advertising campaigns that feature real life couples rocking dandy scarves, the skinniest of skinnies and ubiquitous French swag.

Stylish couples was the intended focus of my blog. However, sunny South Africa is kinda all-together lacking in that department, since it's sometimes hard to find even one really well dressed stunner, so to find two who also happen to be together and in love (that was going to be a prerequisite, no love, no kudos!) is a Halleys-Comet-four-leafed-clover kinda event.

P.S. Tommy loves The Kooples. He made me say that.

Watching Showgirls was a mistake. (Thanks again e.tv).

But I will forever chuckle at the "it's versase" faux pas.

Mispronunciation plagues us all, I remember the day I conquered "chaos" (formerly known as chaa-hoes).*

These clips are so amazing and strangely satisfying-I mean, at least I didn't get it that wrong.

*I just want to point out that this was not a recent victory.

Holy Stripes!

Saint James was the original creator of the Breton stripe, the holy grail of any wardrobe and the official French naval uniform since 1871.

Andre, a Parisian artist and so-called "nightlife overlord" has taken the most iconic Saint James number, the "Naval II" and used it as his canvas.

All that I can say is: I want!

P.S. The shirt has 21 stripes that supposedly represent each naval victory of Napoleon's fleet against the British.

Big Ego

Thursday, May 26, 2011

"Egoiste" meaning "selfish" is 280 pages and 2.3kg. There have been 16 issues of this black and white beaut since 1977.

The ego behind it all; Nicole Wisniak, not only controls all the usual facets of the magazine, she also designs all of the adverts, spending one year creating the Louis Vuitton advert featuring a regal polar bear.

The latest two-volume issue featuring Keira Knightley and James Thierree (grandson of Charlie Chaplin) is already sold out despite its 35 Euro price tag.

Wisniak doesn't care about time (the last issue was published five years ago) or english (the magazine is only in french).

In fact she doesn't care about much; she works from her bed and is quoted as saying that 'taste is not a democratic thing, it's a dictatorship'.

In a world of daily tabloids and oh-so-average monthly magazines this seems like the perfect antidote.

Ties for the Popo!

Do you want to be happy at the expense of others? Go to www.ties4cops.com

This is thee best website because like me, they believe that style comes before justice.

The recent D.S.K story has been in the news lately, but the French have managed to get to the crux of the issue; the absolutely disgusting ties worn by the N.Y cops.

Their ties are bad, Miami Vice-before-Colin-Farrell bad.

This website allows you to change all of that with a variety of options including "kebab"' and my personal favourite "nounours" (teddy bears).

Aaaah, the jealousy I feel is too much!

I'm Hulk-green right now.

I'm sure I would be a better person if this was my view everyday.

I Love Me Some Romance!

Wednesday, March 09, 2011

I started learning French recently and tonight I was taught the word "boyfriend" by my teacher Jean-Didier. This appealed immensely to my romantic nature and I have thus decided to share my new favourite French word...

Now clear your throat and whisper "Copain" (Kuh-peh[n]). Got it? Good!

What makes learning French so especially great is that there are so many cute pictures like these to appreciate while pretending to be studious.
