Get Lo!

Friday, July 29, 2011

In New York City in the '80's and '90's a gang known as The Lo-Lifes cruised the streets decked out in head-to-motherf*ckin'-toe Ralph Lauren.

The name "The Lo-Lifes" was derived from the Ralph Lauren diffusion line Polo.

The members of The Lo-Lifes were inspired by the designer's success. Ralph Lauren, who was actually born an entirely uncool Ralph Lifshitz, was the son of immigrant parents growing up in the Bronx.

The brand's association with the pursuits of the rich and famous: sailing, skiing, and, yup, you guessed it, polo, meant that for young men in an environment totally at odds with such pursuits the uniform was an alchemy of aspiration and escapism.

I gotta admit, I just love this kind of hard line dedication.
